"Orcelito!" Kit hurries over to meet him, giving him a brief, awkward hug while trying not to bop him with the feather. Behind her at a much slower pace comes a glow worm, crawling along the floor; Joe had been awakened just as abruptly as his owner had, but isn't nearly so quick.

"I dunno," Kit says. "I was asleep, then there was this crack of thunder or something that shook the whole tree and now there's smoke and stuff everywhere."
