Scavenger hunt! Well, at least the scavenging part...
| characters | Kit and Orcelito, plus anybody else who wants help out
| date/time | 4-19/ early afternoon
| location | Around the base of the tree
| rating | G
| summary |Kit is poking around on the ground for something that can be made into/used as a weapon, or anything else that might be useful. Want to join her?
Kit wandered around through the grass near the tree's roots, trying to see if she could find anything useful. Especially something that could be useful as a weapon. A long thorn, maybe or a rock that could be shaped to have a nice edge. So far, she wasn't having much luck.
She might go farther out from the roots later if she didn't find anything, but she wanted to wait until the breeze died down a bit. That big, pink flower smelled funny, even from here, and she wasn't eager to go near it if she didn't have to. Besides, she'd heard some people had been having strange effects from it, and wasn't eager to find out whether or not cats were immune.
So for now, she stuck close to the roots, climbing over them or ducking under them where appropriate, as well as looking for any minor nooks, knotholes, or niches that might be accessible in the side of the tree proper. After all, who knew where she might find something interesting?

Investigate, yes/no?
((OOC: Multiple replies accepted, seriously, come bug him. XD This is a good time to build up CR!))

"What are those for?" If it weren't for the tree's aversion to any kind of fire, she'd think he was collecting the wood for that.
no subject
“This is material for wood pulp.” Which is an odd statement by itself, so he clarifies. “I’m hoping to use this to make writing paper.”
no subject
"So that's for the paper. What about the ink? That's going to be a little harder to make, right?"
no subject
no subject
"Wow, you really gave this a lot of thought. How long did it take you to figure out the dye?"
no subject
He smiles and shrugs; a motion that involves his wings as well as his shoulders. “But I’m getting ahead of myself. I need a way to create the wood pulp first.”
no subject
"What would you need for the wood pulp? I can help you gather supplies or anything else, if I can."
no subject
He sighs. “I was thinking of building something but… I don’t have access to plans or tools, and even with those, it would take weeks.” And he doesn’t have weeks. He’s already starting to forget some of the valuable information he was gathering back home. He needs to get back to writing and planning, and soon.
He forces himself to smile again. “But once I have the paste, it should be a simple matter of straining it, pressing it flat, and drying it.”

no subject
"What do you need all those for?"
After spending nearly five days in this place, she's more inclined to speak with others now. She's always quiet about it, gauging the other person and ready to leave them be should they make the indication that they prefer silence.
no subject
“I’m trying to craft paper. It requires a certain quality of wood.” Hence, he has to pick up about twice as much as he’ll actually use. (Though, with his failed attempts so far, he could stand to be less picky.)
no subject
'Parchment' would be the better word to use around her. She remains where she is, looking again at the pile the boy's gathered up in his arms already. He certainly needs a lot of this paper, doesn't he?
"Do you need help...?" Why not? She likes being outdoors and it hasn't been the first time she's had to hunt down wood, though for different purposes.
no subject
“That would be appreciated, thank you.”
He shifts the bundle in his arms so the twigs are standing vertical. He’s not sure how much she knows about wood quality, but a modest lesson is in order. (Orcelito is far from an expert himself, but he does have some trial and error experience.)
“The best pieces of wood are lighter in color and without knots. Look for twigs that are easy to carry, and thin enough to be broken into pieces.” He pauses, then adds, “There are also other materials I’m interested in… shell fragments, small bones, insect wings, and anything else with a low decay rate.”
One more thing – he doesn’t like working with strangers. But that is easily corrected.
He smiles. “My name is Orcelito. And your name, Miss?”
no subject
She nods quietly, then listens to his explanation. It doesn't go unappreciated—she knows what's best for starting campfires or for dwindling down into utensils, but for this 'paper'? Not a clue. Then she raises a brow as the list grows. Are these also involved in the making of paper?
"All right," she says simply. She'll ask him what this is all about if she actually finds such things. "Orcelito... I'm Riona." Hopefully she said right, though it may still sound strange with her accent.
"And I don't know if we'll find small bones. But I'll look." As she turns, she pauses to ask:
"So what's paper?"
no subject
He stares at her. (Riona, you might as well have just asked what trees are. He’s struggling to conceptualize a world without paper.)
“Paper. Paper is what we write on, where I come from.” At this point, he’s not even sure she’s literate, but he keeps explaining. “It’s a light-colored material – not quite fabric – but it’s also thin, flexible, and has a smooth texture. It comes in sheets of varying sizes, and you bind it together to create books.” Err, maybe she doesn’t know what books are? “It’s made from trees or plants.”
He watches her while he talks, hoping to see some recognition.
no subject
Yes, she recognizes it. Sort of. It's only after he finishes speaking that her expression changes from blank to contemplative, accompanied by a shrug. "I didn't know we could make it from trees... I suppose we wouldn't be able to find proper animal skin in a place like this. Are you going to use it to write? Do you have ink?"
no subject
“Yes, parchment, it’s like that!”
Parchment is made from animal skins, right? Yes, he remembers now. His world had that a long time ago, before paper and printing technology. Some parchment documents still exist – he just doesn’t usually see them.
“Paper replaced parchment on my world. It’s easier to manufacture and work with.” And, as he’s learned recently, it can last an incredibly long time when stored in the right environment.
“I haven’t been able to make ink yet… but I’ve prepared some dark dyes that can be used with a brush. I just need a surface to write on. Something that can be made and stored easily.”

Sorry for lateness. XD
One way to find out, she supposes. Ducking under a protruding root, she approaches the young man. "Hi," she says. "You hunting for something too?"
No problem~ The important thing is that you're here! ^^
When his eyes meet hers’, they are momentarily widened and startled. A girl? Not quite a girl? He’s seen genetic manipulation before but this… this is something new entirely. Is that a real tail? She must have a fantastic sense of balance. And she’s so young! The youngest person he’s seen since coming here, in fact. He didn’t think any children were here. It’s unsettling. For it’s one thing for adults and adolescences to be swept to another planet, but quite another for a child under thirteen to be here.
Ah, wait! He should be polite and not stare. He doesn’t want to trouble her. So he quickly puts on a smile.
“Not hunting, just gathering wood.” He’s a little thrown off by the use of the word ‘hunting’. But another concern immediately springs to mind. “I haven’t seen you here before. Did you just arrive?”
>^.^<
"Well, I meant hunting as in looking for something," Kit says. "And I can see you're gathering wood, but what for? You planning on making something?" Maybe that's why certain twigs apparently aren't making the cut.
She shake her head though, when asked if she'd just arrived. "Uh-uh," she says. "I've been here for about a month now. I guess we just haven't run into each other before now. My name's Wily-Kit, by the way. What's yours?"
no subject
“My name is Orcelito. Nice to meet you, Wily-Kit.” He smiles when he pronounces the name – it sounds cute, like a name in a children’s book.
no subject
She brightens back up when he introduces himself, though. "Nice to meet you too," she says. And you can just call me Kit, if you want."
no subject
Still, he’s happy she’s looking out for him, so he thanks her cordially. “You are quite right in your precautions. Thank you for letting me know.” He won’t hurt the Tree, most definitely not. As long as it is caring for him, he will protect it.
This conversation does revive his original concern though (he is, after all, a big brother at heart). “Kit, if I may ask, is anyone else from your world here with you?”
no subject
"What do you want the paper for, though?", she asks curious. "Do you use it for magic, like the Woodforgers did? Or do you just want it for regular drawing and writing?"
She shakes her head, though, when asked if there are any others from her world there. "Uh-uh," she says a bit sadly. "Not that I've seen, anyway. I'm not too worried; my brother and I have been on our own before, so we know how to survive. It's just kinda... lonely without even him here. I mean, I've made new friends here, but it's not really the same thing, you know?"
She shrugs slightly. She doubts that Orcelito will understand entirely, unless he too has a twin back home, but separation from family and friends is fairly universal around the tree.
no subject
His expression turns thoughtful and somber as she continues talking. He’s glad that she knows how to get by, but he’s distressed that it is even necessary at her age. She is not human and maybe she has more ability to care for herself, but no child should be alone. It’s just… not right.
He takes a deep breath before he can respond. “Yes, I do in a way. It’s been months since I saw my own sister and brother.” And the hardest part is, it never gets easier. But he won’t tell her that.
