03 Amber | Downstream of the Boat

[hairsay]

[For once this lanky young woman does not look like she's trying to win a staring contest with a cockatrice when she activates her amber slice. She does look sweaty and tired, but maybe that's actually helping. Behind her the mist is close, a towering wall, but the chuckle of the stream gives away her location before she can even open her mouth.]

Hey, any of you happen to be strong and willing to lend a hand? Me and Evan, [And indeed, the gawky redhead struggling to roll and heft rocks behind her happens to be in the frame as she talks,] are putting together a fish trap. I don't know about any of you but the thought of real meat that we don't have to bargain for with stone doubloons is so tempting we've been building this thing for the last couple of weeks straight.

It could use refining.

[She swings the slice around to reveal a very crude weir along one side of the stream composed entirely of raised pebbles and smooth rocks; it doesn't block the stream because Jo has noted the boat at dock just upstream of her location, but she's making a fair play at funnelling any minnows into it.]

Once we're done we just need some bait and some lucky catches. I never learned spear fishing but I'll bet some of you super freaks has a leg up on that. Come on down, huh?

You go looking out where the main current is and you'll see minnows poking around that ship that a lot of you came sailing in on. I'll bet there's more wherever the stream comes from, too. Only reason we're building these out is to make it easier to net them in... and yeah, I'm thinking on grabbing one of the mounts from Chime's shop to pick out some bugs to lure the little buggers in.

I do not know how to swim, but I can stand on water. I could easily harpoon one if they are close and lured to my position. They are not as speedy as I can be nor do they have my strength. If you find this useful, I am willing to cooperate.

[Jo drops her face into her free palm and lets the amber slice fall so that it's reflecting only a sliver of stream and her stained pant legs. What is with these people?! Walk on water?!

How come she didn't pick up any fucking fantastic powers somewhere between her inordinately mundane childhood and whatever hallucinatory hell she was currently occupying?

Saber might be able to hear her muttering,] Of course you can, why didn't I fucking think of that? [before she brings the slice back up to look on the other woman face to face.]

You know what, if you're willing to cooperate, I'm not gonna say no. There's a few of us for who eating meat's going to make things a lot more easy around here. You'd be doing people a solid.

[knight_king]

[Saber watches her reaction calmly and waits until she recovers to answer.]

I am. That is why I volunteered with this. If there are fish on those waters, I will be able to fish them.

[hairsay]

You know what? I'm not sure why I didn't just ask everyone else to do this to begin with instead of throwing my back out a few times hefting these damned rocks, but at this point I'm not going to be choosy.

If you got a way to store or cook more than a handful of minnows I think we could use all we can get.

It must be because you wish to cooperate and have initiative to start a project. That is praiseworthy.

Hm. I am afraid that is not a field I am not good for. I do not know how to cook.

[hairsay]

[Jolene has a moment to look Saber over. There's something robotic about the quality of her words, but she can't quite put her finger on it... in any case, the dark-haired woman gives a wretched snort and then a laugh at that last comment.]

You can fucking tell me that twice! I live with a bachelor and a cat who likes to eat his own blue hairballs. I never thought that I'd be the one with the cooking skills, but life throws you a bone every once in a while I fucking guess!

[knight_king]

Oh you know how to cook. That is very useful, I am fairly envious of your talent.

[She is a gourmand who cannot cook.]

I am able to perform most house chores and yet cooking eludes me.

[hairsay]

[Jo casts a look over the amber that ought to speak volumes. 'You kidding me?' is what she doesn't want to say out loud.]

Well, you got it made there, then. They cram us full of nuts and berries until the cows come home.

I do not like meals that are not well-prepared.

[One does not simply eat just what is available, specially when there is no need for them to eat.]
