[In the darkness, the burst of yellow light is startling. He squints and stumbles back, catching himself with his hands. He’s still blinking away the spots when his boot touches the side of one of the vials, and he looks down at them in surprise.

He’s not sure what these are. But he does know one thing for certain. That was a response.]

Hm. So you can hear me? [He picks up the vials, examining them. Is this… gold dust? No, it’s different somehow. He tucks them away in his coat and resumes gazing at the mirror.]

Thank you for the gifts. Though I wish you would show yourself. If we could speak face to face, I think we could understand each other better.

[His gaze wanders to the next riddle below. And he has an idea.] Excuse me for a moment.

[He stands and leaves the branch. Several minutes later, he walks back in with a firefly clinging to his shoulder. Again, Orcelito kneels before the mirror. He coaxes the firefly onto his arm and holds it before him. It’s heavy, but rests contently on his arm with an even glow.]

If you’re still listening, I’d like to introduce you to someone. This is my… [he can’t call it a pet, more like a-] friend. I have not bestowed a name on him yet. He has been with me for two months, and it is thanks to him that I was able to make the dyes and inks to write with. [He smiles a little.] I’d like to name him now and present him to you as Astor.

[And now he’ll await another response.]
