[After taking a look at the items in the shop herself, there's one set in particular that catches her interest, and Korra's sure it could be helpful to many of the people living in the tree. If she hesitates before turning the amber on, it's only because she's already mentioned a few times that one element per bender is the norm in her world, and her offer is going to look suspicious when she's already used water bending very visibly. But when it comes to her own comfort over the needs of the people around her, Korra knows which one she would choose.

She kind of sucked at the incognito thing anyway, if she's honest.]

Hey, I know Saber's already mentioned the tree spirit's store, but there's something in there I wanted to talk about: the needles. I think most of us already figured out how hard finding stuff like metal is around here. [Korra fidgets, looking away from the amber for a moment.] A-anyway, the point is, if we pool our resources together and buy the needles, I can make some knives and daggers out of them.

After the surprise we had with the spiders, I think we should make sure as many of us have something to defend ourselves with as possible.

[At this point, she's catching on and there's really no point in protesting. He's not exactly bad company and what else is there to do around this place anyway?

The corner of her mouth quirks up when she looks at him.]

Actually, I think I remember telling you it needed some more work.

[ He rubs his ear, comically exaggerated. ]

Sorry, what? Didn't hear ya there.

[She snorts in amusement, pulling out one of the chairs and flopping down onto it carelessly.]

Sure you didn't. [She gets over the teasing after a moment, though, peering into the bowl curiously. If she didn't know any better, there's some stuff that looks decidedly not like the nuts and leafy foods they're given at the altar.] What's in it anyway?

S'a surprise, [ he says genially, as he sits down with her. ] give it a try and tell me?

A "surprise", huh? [Instead of digging in, she just props her chin in her hand and looks at him.]

Sounds to me like you don't know what it is either.

Y'keep tellin' yourself that, [ casually steals a spoonful k. ] maybe one day it'll hit the mark. [ a pause ] — you ain't a vegetarian or need kosher meat or somethin'?

[A smile tugs at her lips.]

Nah, not me. If Tenzin and his kids were here, though, you'd be in trouble.

[Her gaze slides down to the table, smile shrinking a little, but she doesn't seem sad, really. Just pensive.]

I grew up in the Water Tribe. Hunting's still a pretty big part of our culture.

Me? In trouble? You're thinkin' of somebody else. [ he punctuates with a playful wink. ] Yeah? Where'd you folks live?

[ Since 'Water Tribe' is. You know. Kind of vague to him. ]

[She shakes her head a little, smiling.]

No, I mean. They're Air Nomads. They're all vegetarian--I stayed with them for a while, so I'm used to it now. Probably a good thing, since that's all we're getting from the tree anyway.

[A pointed glance at the bowl, with its Mystery Meat.]

You already know about Republic City... that's where Tenzin's family is. The Water Tribe's in the North and South Poles.

[ Nuh-uh, he's not going to tell her what the meat is. ]

Kinda like monks, huh? Heard about 'em.

[ Spiritual folk. Well, he's seen too many bombed out churches to believe his own God is watching out for them, but it's nice to know there's people out there who haven't lost their way. ]

Didn't figure 'em for living in the city, though. Must be [ he wiggles his fingers at her ] somethin' real charming about yours.

[Korra taps her finger against the table, a slight frown on her face now.]

Tenzin used to be a councilman for Republic City. That's why he was living there--it's where he was born, too.

[She's not sure how much she should bring up. It seems inevitable that Aang will come up in the conversation at some point, but everything that goes with Air Nomad history could take ages to explain.]

[ he nods. ]

Makes sense. You like living there?

Yeah. [Korra smiles a little, thinking of the city that had been her home for a while.]

After living in the-- [she nearly says "in the compound" but stops herself in time] --in the South Pole for so long, the city was a nice change. It's where I met my friends, too.

[ He quirks an eyebrow. ]

Did you not have any before that?

Uh-- [Korra just gives him a deer-in-the-headlights look, unable to think up a plausible excuse.]

...no. [She sinks down in her chair a little.] It was just me and Naga before I got to Republic City.

[ His expression softens. ]

Who's Naga?

[Korra's expression immediately brightens up, though part of her still sorely misses her companion.]

She's my best friend--my polar bear dog. I found her out in the snow when she was a cub, and we've been together ever since.

[ That's a very touching story but — ]

Polar.. bear.. dog?

[ help??? ]

Oh, yeah. [Comprehension flickers in her eyes.] I forget the animals in my world are kind of different to most of you guys.

[At least she's used to getting that kind of reaction now.]

[ A pause. ]

So, it's a dog that's a polar bear or a polar bear that's a dog?
