| summary | A flash of light, and a new adventure.

LIGHT

Warmth, love and kindness.
The Life Stream glimmers and glitters with joy, swirls of shimmering dust dancing around the ray of life.
It was time for new ones to test their wings.

One by one, new adventurers now arrive in the Tree. As one gain wings and rises to the second floor, another light brings in the next person. Soon, a steady stream of people from all kinds of worlds, times and realities come to join the others. Whether confused, angry, excited or scared, your arrival is welcomed with nothing but joy as the fireflies and glow worms descend to greet their new friends.

The Tree offers no explanation and no reason, but the truth is undeniable.

As you will soon realize, it isn't easy to be tiny.

Time travel... Time travel should not be a plausible explanation for this sort of circumstances and yet, in the Kingdom of Hyrule, such things were so commonplace for Heroes. Between moving between realms of Light and Shadow and travelling back and forwards through time, perhaps the fact that the Hero has never encountered himself (or has failed to meet himself more often) was the truly surprising part of their tale.

"..."

This would move much faster, Link thought to himself, if Midna were here. He wasn't even entirely sure if he was seeing things or not; at least the Twili would be incredibly forward about her disbelief over what was happening right here.

In this room.

What.

Faron had mentioned that these were the Hero's Clothes but he hadn't honestly expected the Heroes of old to... well, to look like him.

"..." he laughed quietly before he let go of his weapon and stood up properly, lopsided smile on and brows knitted in uncertainty. "This is... Strange. Right?"

Such a thick, awkward silence! Both of them seemed to be waiting for something similar... another shared trait, perhaps?

Link visibly relaxed when the other youth began to laugh, mirroring (almost literally!) that uncertain smile with a nod of agreement. Swordfight averted!

"Definitely strange." he echoed.

"I wasn't expecting to see something like this. ...At least, not so soon, anyway."

He'd gotten the gist of things when Demise had been defeated-- that the three of them would keep returning, in a cycle, but he hadn't expected to witness it in the same lifetime. That just... didn't make sense, right? But then, he never claimed to know how that reincarnation business was supposed to work, either... and Link knew by now that 'impossible' was a word he ought to strike from his vocabulary entirely.

"... 'So soon'?"

Link's head immediately tilted in confusion. That made even less sense than this scenario. Or maybe not? If the former farmhand thought about it, there had always been hints that he was not the first Hero (he would never be so presumptuous as to think he was) but the way this other boy talked about it... It sounded as if he was certain rather than just suspicious.

That none of the Spirits or Sages felt like being forthcoming with their knowledge, that he had never had the time to speak with Zelda or even Ganondorf or the Hero's Shade about this struggle, was starting to become a little annoying. Could they not have avoided what happened to Hyrule all together if they knew?

... Probably not. 'A divine joke' indeed.

"Were you..." How should he ask this? "You were the hero before me, then?"

Should he refer to this boy the same age as him as grandpa now?

Don't you dare.

His eyes turned aside at that first comment, but were quickly on the other again, observing him carefully. The years-- however many they'd come to be-- didn't really change them, did they? Or maybe they did, but it's something to think about, he supposed. But ... if this Link was so confused (if only for the moment), did that mean they didn't know about the cycle later down the line? That was a little concerning...

Then, at his question, Link nodded almost immediately. If he had his doubts about the other boy's identity, he certainly didn't now. "That would seem to be the case."

A beat, and he began to walk across the little room, closing the distance with a hand extended.

"Link,"

...And it was entirely impossible to tell if he was giving or assuming names.

TL;DRS ALL OVER THIS LOG

[personal profile] twilightlegend 2015-03-20 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
Grandpappy.

He knew, very vaguely, of the fact that there were Heroes before him. There must have been if he had inherited the forest green tunic from them and if all the Gorons and Zoras had left treasures to him. But even if their core character never changed, their upbringing alone was bound to make them different. One was a farmhand who had lived within the borders of the province for all his life while the other was a trained knight who had a bird from the Goddess herself. Their differences were as clear as night and day.

There was a moment's pause before Link relaxed then blinked in confusion. 'Link' as well? ... Don't tell him that the destined Heroes inherited this name as well.

With a quiet laugh, the country boy took the other Hero's hand to shake.

"An honour."

And it was. A few months ago, when he had this grand destiny foisted upon him by the Spirit Faron and Midna laughing at him at every turn, it wasn't. But now, after everything was said and done and Ganondorf slain(?) it was. He was honestly grateful.

"So, uh..." he flushed slightly because if there were two of them... "Do we know what the Gods want us to do?"

'Gods', plural. Not 'Goddess' so that should be indication enough to the 'older' Link that quite a bit had changed in the centuries between their births.

GO MAN GO

[personal profile] sleepwardsnored 2015-03-20 06:05 am (UTC)(link)
NO. Bad doge, take that back this instant!

Knight and hero he may be, but 'honour', got him to fluster a little in return. Really, it was not that big of a deal, was it? ...Or, it was, and he simply didn't know how to handle it. He imagined this Link must have gone through his own share of adventures by now-- he certainly looked it-- and ultimately, their service to the Goddess the same, so-- wait.

Gods?

There was a similar look of confusion on his end as he tried to suss that out, but it wasn't as if he could leave that question hanging. After a moment of thought, he shook his head.

"If we were supposed to be given signs beyond the stones back there, I haven't seen any. So... besides 'get home safely', I don't think she'd have anything specific in mind... though if there's the both of us here..."

He was rambling a little, at somewhat of a loss without Fi to keep him focused.
twilightlegend: (Dear friends in higher places)

[personal profile] twilightlegend 2015-03-21 04:33 am (UTC)(link)
uuuwu ;;

... It looked like some things didn't change between Heroes. The slightly helpless and easily distracted nature of their person seemed to be one of them. Between Fi and Midna's absences, it may very well be a minor miracle to get the two of them on the right track to find anything. Oh well, it shouldn't be too difficult, right? Their current location seemed much smaller than where they had been before.

There was a quiet sigh as Link stood through that rambling reply.

"So you know about as much as I do." About this situation anyway. Onto the next question; "Who is 'she'?"

You're never going to get to ask your own questions at this rate, Grandpa.
sleepwardsnored: (i am awake and making a listening)

[personal profile] sleepwardsnored 2015-03-21 08:29 am (UTC)(link)
Right. Perhaps if their efforts were concentrated solely on the tree and its surroundings, the two of them could maintain some modicum of focus. ...Hopefully.

Link nodded back a little sheepishly. No one here seemed to know what was going on, just yet... but at least that next question was an easy one to answer.

"Zelda,"

He replied, as if it were the most obvious thing in the world. ...Well, Hylia, technically, but it still seemed odd to call her by one name when they'd both known her by another until recently.
twilightlegend: (So take a breath of myth and mystery)

[personal profile] twilightlegend 2015-03-22 04:16 am (UTC)(link)
Well... Zelda was the crown princess. It would make sense that they could defer to her when there was no other options available (because Zelda knew a lot and Link trusted her judgement even if the results were startling and uhappy) but the way the other Link talked about it didn't quite line up with this Link's point of view. What a strange leap though, to go from a mention of Gods to talking about the princess.

Hm.

At least the confusion was written clearly on Link's face? The difference in time and the effect it has had on Hyrule, it's Hero and it's Princess was quickly becoming apparent.
sleepwardsnored: (fukken remlits outta nowhere)

[personal profile] sleepwardsnored 2015-03-22 06:20 am (UTC)(link)
...And there's another pregnant pause when he realizes that the other Link might not know what he's going on about. How much time had passed, he wondered?

...Then again, much of what he'd learned over the course of his journey had once been lost to time, as well, so his look of surprise isn't quite as dramatic as it could be. The cycle continued, but the details were lost, understandably.

Link's a little apprehensive about sharing those particular details, as well. It was a lot to take in the first time, and if this Link didn't know, then who knew what his reaction would be? With a bit of a resigned look, the youth glances about the room.

"In any case, it looks like we're on our own for now. ...So to speak." he adds. Wow, Link, awesome joke. A+ good job.
twilightlegend: (Where the lost are finally found)

[personal profile] twilightlegend 2015-03-23 07:31 am (UTC)(link)
Link didn't seem content with the lack of answer but... Neither the Sages nor the Light Spirits had been forthright with the history behind the Hero. Perhaps it was simply the nature of their quest to be strung along like this. It still didn't bring Link any sort of comfort.

The discontent look was quickly replaced with a grimace because why. Goddesses, of all the things they needed right now!

"Have you seen any chests or...?"

Was what he asked to start, but after a second, he pulled on his earring and changed direction.

"How have you handled the flying?"
sleepwardsnored: (I don't really get what's going on but)

[personal profile] sleepwardsnored 2015-03-23 07:41 am (UTC)(link)
Perhaps another time. The grimace is met with a sheepish smile, in any case. He knew it was terrible, but it steered the conversation away from an awkward history lesson, at least!

And before he can comment on the lack of chests or pottery, the other Link switches gears again to something probably more relevant. With a gentle noise of acknowledgement, Link digs around in his pouch until his fingers clasp around the little yellow stone, revealing his pair of violet-tipped hornet's wings. Strong, and from what he's experienced, manageable.

"It's been strange, but easy enough to work with. ...How about you?"
twilightlegend: (Touch your feathers to the breeze)

.. have we been commenting with mismatching tenses the whole time-

[personal profile] twilightlegend 2015-03-25 05:32 am (UTC)(link)
[fuck it, I'll just cry about it tonight before I go to bed]

Thankfully, Links were never known for their tendency to chase down history lessons sort of the ones foisted upon them by their chaperones or by whatever servant of the Gods was currently aiding them. With all these reincarnations, you'd think they would have chanced upon a studious young man by now. Oh well, such is life.

"...?"

He reached into his own pouch to retrieve his dark blue gem and reveal the large moth wings that accompanied it. That was strange. With both of them being Heroes, one would assume that they would have the same gems...

Huh.

"It's a little different from what I'm used to," he admitted before adding: "A lot more freedom..."
sleepwardsnored: (music in the air)

everything I write tries to force itself back into present tense I'M SORRY

[personal profile] sleepwardsnored 2015-03-30 07:27 am (UTC)(link)
Perhaps in another, even more distant age, one of them would understand. For now, the both of them seemed to be distracted by the difference in wings. They were wildly different-- one whose shimmered not unlike Hylia's strange fragments of plumage, and the other that bore markings that seemed both familiar and foreign. Link was reminded of the Gate somewhat, but... kept that suggestion to himself for now, as he looked over the fluffy-looking appendages appreciatively. They were a little closer to bird wings-- he couldn't help feeling a tiny bit envious.

A silly feeling, really. "First time flying?" he suggested to the other, gently.
twilightlegend: (So bid the forest floor good-bye)

GRANDPAPPY WHY

[personal profile] twilightlegend 2015-04-03 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
Link made a face before he nodded. 'Flying' for him had never been a particularly good experience... But that's probably because the closest thing to flight that he's ever experience was being shot straight out of a cannon. Not the fondest memory that he had.

He much preferred riding around the fields upon Epona.

But looking more closely as the other Link's wings, Link's eyes widen when he recognizes a familiar pattern. His own moth wings flutter when he reached up to point.

"The Light Vessel!"
sleepwardsnored: (i am awake and making a listening)

i'm old that's why

[personal profile] sleepwardsnored 2015-04-06 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
He again mirrored the other Link's expression in quiet surprise, right down to his own wings buzzing, casting odd, purplish reflections over the room.

"You recognize it?" Sure, it had been referred to as a Soul Vessel during his trials, but "Light Vessel" made just as much sense, really. "Then you've dealt with the Tears as well...?"

Just how similar were their journeys, he wondered...
twilightlegend: (So bid the forest floor good-bye)

[personal profile] twilightlegend 2015-04-21 06:13 am (UTC)(link)
Link nodded enthusiastically at the mention of the Tears. This was exciting for him, to hear that his own journey followed similar paths to the one taken by other Heroes. They were never truly alone in their journeys, but it was impossible for someone else to understand the tribulations experienced by the Hero himself. He'd tried to explain the feeling of listlessness to Ilia after bidding farewell Midna but had found himself at a loss.

... Honestly, he looked a little like a puppy who just got praised.

"With the spirits!" As if that explained everything.

"In order to return Light to the areas covered in Twilight. Or..." but that didn't sound quite right, "Or maybe it was different for you?"
sleepwardsnored: (music in the air)

[personal profile] sleepwardsnored 2015-05-03 06:39 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, it was just as exciting on his end, too! That even in a time so different, certain things remained the same... besides their obvious similarities, there were more connections between the two that he was eager to discover!

So, with a big smile, he listened, and with a rare ease responded.

"Slightly different. It wasn't to restore Light, but to prove strength of spirit to the Goddesses." Though now that he said it, he wondered offhandedly-- was it just his spirit or both of theirs, now? Curious, this cycle thing.

"What was the Twilight like?" Maybe it was similar to the Silent Realm? ...Though a little less, er, stressful, he hoped...
twilightlegend: (There's a dreamy world up there)

[personal profile] twilightlegend 2015-05-05 05:58 am (UTC)(link)
Was it because they were, ultimately, at the core of it all, the same person? Or was it because the two had simply been through so many similar events that they could just read between the lines and understand what the other was talking about? Either way, the ease at which this conversation seemed to carry itself was uncharacteristic for Link.

... Both Links.

Oooh, this was going to be confusing, wasn't it?

"Strength of spirit..." That sounded like a trial of some sort. Link wondered idly if the Light Spirits knew of this legacy. But when he's asked about the Twilight, Link's smile took on a slightly melancholy edge. In his excitement, he had momentarily forgotten the events that had happened back home.

"... It's very serene and a little sad. When you first come across it, it's startling and not very pleasant but..." he trailed off before adding softly, "It's very beautiful."
sleepwardsnored: (the part we pretend he's not silent)

[personal profile] sleepwardsnored 2015-05-18 06:02 am (UTC)(link)
They'd figure something out eventually. Probably. Such is the advantage of being Link, an excellent problem solver no matter what the incarnation! ...Right?

Listening to the other Link describe the Twilight, he nodded, silently noting the similarities to the Silent Realm... although the 'serenity' of such a place never seemed to last too long, in his own experience. He hoped that, despite the melancholy tone in his voice, that this other boy had a better experience with it, but there would be no way to tell without more questions.

...Which he was eager to get to anyway, but perhaps not all at once!

"I suppose it would be startling to see, if it had taken over places the Light had been..."
